Angelina Jolie’s The Breadwinner – A Story Of An Afghan Girl

Released earlier this week, the trailer of Angelina Jolie’s animated film tells the story of an Afghan girl who disguises herself as a boy to support her family.

Titled The Breadwinner, this animation tells the story of a young Afghan girl named Parvana who cuts her hair and disguises herself as a boy so as to earn money for her family after the Taliban imprisoned her father.

The girls also puts her life at risk in a bid to find out whether her father is still alive.

The movie is produced by Jolie and features Pakistani actor Ali Kazmi as one of the voice actors.

In a press release issued earlier this week, Jolie said: “I am proud to be a part of this beautiful film with this timely and very important subject matter.”

“Millions of girls around the world have to grow up before their time, working to provide for their families at a very young age and in difficult circumstances. They have the strength to do what no one should ask little girls to do. I hope this film is able to bring this discussion to a broader audience,” she said.

The Breadwinner is based on a children’s novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis and will be released later this year.

The storyline appears to be similar to that of Osama a 2003 drama film made in Afghanistan. The movie Osama rocketed to fame after winning numerous awards including a Golden Globe for best foreign language movie.

The film follows a pre-teen girl living in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime who disguises herself as a boy, Osama, to support her family. It was the first film to be shot entirely in Afghanistan since 1996, when the Taliban regime banned the creation of all films.
